Free Talking with John 2015-11-14

2015年11月14日

Lesson 1 - 15:00-16:00 - 2 Students.

Such a rainy day today! We started talking about the rain and our feelings towards it. One student said it is so inconvenient as you have to put on waterproofs. I don't have waterproofs, and spoke of a storm in Hamamatsu where I tried to bring an umbrella to my friend and got soaked. My friend stayed dry as someone drove her home. We spoke of what she was doing in Japan and why she had hated England; her job had been as a live-in carer, which is a stressful job. We spoke a bit about the stress of being a carer before suggesting jobs to one of the students. Shop Assistant was mentioned, but I said you do end up hating the customers. The student currently works as a postman, which explains why they are not keen on the rain. We spoke about delivering things in the rain, such as newspapers or letters. One student said they were surprised to see, in American films, the paperboy throwing the newspaper at the front door. I said this would not happen in England, as we love to complain and would complain about our papers being thrown. The other thing we love doing in England is queuing. An experiment proved that English people will join a queue, even if they don't know what they are queuing for. I said I liked that people queue for the trains in Japan, as we don't in England, but that I hate it when the train is packed and I am squashed against other people. British people are prudish and like our personal space. We then talked about where our personal space was.

Vocab:
Difference between Have a cold and Feel cold
Propped up
Keen on
Mood
Live-in carer.
Prudish.
Two abreast.

Lesson 2 - 16:00-17:00 - 2 Students.

We started this lesson with the students asking me about who my favourite author was, so I told them about Terry Pratchett and the Discworld novels. The students then told me who their favourite authors are. One student likes an old Japanese writer who committed suicide, but the students were not sure why. I mentioned that Terry Pratchett had Alzheimer's and so wanted to able to have someone help him to commit suicide when it got really bad. We talked about our views on Euthanasia and if we thought it should be allowed. This was a sad topic, so we changed for a happier one and started talking about Harry Potter. We discussed which spells we would like to perform, which teacher was our favourite and which creature we wouldn't want to meet. We then talked about the two new spin off films and theater play that are being made, which we would all like to see. This brought us to the cinema, and I recently saw グラスホッパー at the cinema (I couldn't really understand it but it was a good film). The students said what they had last seen in the cinema; one of the films was Evanglion. I like Evangelion, so we spoke about the delays in the new films being released, and an Eva exhibition at a museum I had gone to. It had been raining that day too, and my umbrella was stolen! kao04 We talked about leaving umbrellas in places and I mentioned the warehouse in London full of items left on the buses or trains. Somehow, they have ended up with shelves full of prosthetic arms and legs....kao_16

Vocab:

Alzheimer's
Euthanasia
Warehouse

Prosthetic Legs/Arms

Thank you both for coming out in the rain today! I hope to see you both next week! kao05

Today we practiced a conversation on how to recommend something, how to ask for information about a good movie or concert, etc. The students made their own dialogues on this subject.
For the free talking part, the students were instructed to ask for recommendation (on something, somewhere, etc.) from each other. They asked interesting questions and gave nice answers.
